Streamlining Industrial Maintenance with Integrated Cleaning and Coating Services

The first—and often most important—step in any industrial coating project is surface preparation.  The  preparation of the surface typically involves cleaning the surface to remove residues, and abrasive blasting to achieve the desired substrate profile or “anchor pattern”. The thoroughness of the cleaning and quality of the profile will determine the coating’s adhesion, durability, and lifespan.

Which is why it makes sense for many clients to work with just one company for both the cleaning/profiling and coating application. By selecting one contractor, clients can simplify their process while also relying on one set of expertise throughout the life of a project and reducing opportunities for mistakes.

As part of a suite of new service offerings made possible through a recent acquisition, CTL Engineering now offers combined industrial cleaning and coating application.

ALLIED ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES HISTORY WITH INDUSTRIAL CLEANING AND EXPANSION INTO INDUSTRIAL COATING

Allied Environmental Services, which was recently acquired by CTL, has a long history with industrial cleaning and maintenance. Specializing in the petrochemical, heavy manufacturing and other industries that work with hazardous materials, Allied is one of the Great Lakes region’s premier industrial and environmental contracting firms and has provided industrial maintenance and cleaning to clients for more than 35 years.

In 2022, as a result of customer demand, Allied expanded these services to include interior and exterior corrosion-resistant coatings and linings for storage tanks and pipelines, and coating of structural steel and concrete.

COMPREHENSIVE INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE PACKAGES

While some industrial coating projects, such as coating handrails, stanchions and other supporting structures can be fairly straightforward, most industrial coating is more technical and complex—such as coating the inside of a storage tank or vessel.

This highly specialized service requires concentrated expertise, from confined space entry utilizing supplied air, to controlling the atmosphere for temperature and humidity as the coating is applied, to monitoring the coating for the appropriate thickness and adhesion.

Because of its 35-year history of cleaning the inside of storage tanks and vessels in the petrochemical and manufacturing industries, Allied is already well-positioned in the field since the first (and often most important) step of preparing for an industrial coating is preparing the surface with an industrial cleaning.

The advantage we have over our competition is our ability to self-perform all aspects of a resurfacing project from start to finish”, Allied Industrial Coatings Manager Chris Anderson said.  “Our crews can isolate and blank the equipment, evacuate and transfer any remaining contents, clean the vessel, blast and prepare the surface, apply the coating or lining, provide quality assurance testing, and bring the equipment back into service.”

By offering the cleaning, blasting and coating together, Allied can now offer clients an entire tank maintenance package – meaning clients work with just one contractor from the day the tank is taken out of service until it is refilled again. This not only simplifies the process for clients, but it also will often expedite timelines because it requires the mobilization of only one crew.  Allied’s employees are trained and certified  to perform all aspects of the project, and coating can begin as soon as surface preparation is completed.

“Having a singular crew mobilize to the worksite and complete all tasks from start to finish, without interruption, also results in a better finished project,” Anderson said.

In April, Allied began their largest industrial coating project to date, prepping and coating multiple bulk storage tanks at a large oil refinery in Northwest Ohio.

INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE NOW AVAILABLE TO CTL CLIENTS

As they become more integrated into CTL Engineering, both companies hope that the industrial expertise they provide will benefit CTL’s existing client base, simplifying the process of hiring just one consultant even further.

CTL Engineering has had an environmental services team for many years, and adding the practical service of industrial coating and cleaning enhances the already robust suite of services available to CTL clients.
